Mannose binding lectin 2.
Mannose-binding lectin (protein C) 2, soluble.
Mannose-binding lectin (MBL), also called mannose-binding protein (MBP) is a member of the collectin family of proteins in which collagen structures are associated with carbohydrate-recognizing lectin domains [1]. MBL is a serum protein that binds a large variety of sugar moieties expressed by bacteria, viruses, protozoa and helminths through a pattern-recognition mode of detection [2]. MBL can mediate phagocytosis of microorganisms and induce inflammatory responses. MBL can also activate the complement system via MBL-associated serine proteases (MASPs). MBL is encoded by a single human gene, mbl2 (mbl1 is a pseudogene) and by two mouse genes, mbl1 and mbl2 [3].
